Beginning your bhakti yoga journey: A guide for new practitioners

Understanding bhakti yoga: the path of devotion Bhakti yoga is more than physical asanas, it is a journey of the heart. In fact, it is often referred to as “yoga of the heart”. All yoga means a connection, union with the divine and in bhakti yoga, practitioners focus on offering their actions with love.  Why begin a bhakti yoga journey? The bhakti yoga journey is a transformative one. Mantra meditation, acts of service and positive association all encourage peacefulness, mindfulness and harmonious community living. Additionally, as bhakti yoga is an emotional process, practitioners find it a wholesome, heartwarming experience. It is the art of eternal love.  Foundational principles of bhakti yoga Bhakti yoga is about offering everything you do with love and devotion. What you do, what you eat, everything. And you do this with consciousness. Chanting of the sacred hare krishna mantra combined with learning from teachers and ancient texts elevates your consciousness and transforms the heart.  Preparing your practice: mindset and intentions There isn’t really much you need to do to begin your bhakti yoga journey, but as with any endeavour having a set goal and positive mindset always helps! Prepare yourself by setting a reachable bhakti goal. This could look like reading a chapter of Bhagavad Gita As It Is each week or doing 30 minutes of japa meditation (chanting the hare krishna mantra on beads) every weekend. You might also like to keep a “bhakti journal” to record your realisations along the way.  Sacred texts and teachings: wisdom for the journey There are many texts in the bhakti yoga tradition to help practitioners at all levels. Bhagavad Gita As It Is is the quintessential bhakti yoga text, but there are also other wonderful books to dive into such as: The Science of Self Realisation and The Nectar of Instruction. Check them out for yourself!

Kirtana: How chanting mantra uplifts the heart

The transformative power of sacred sound Mantra in Sanskrit literally means to free the mind. Mantras are spiritual chants done alone or with others for spiritual benefit. Think “om”, or for bhakti yogis, the hare krishna mantra. Kirtana is the act of chanting these mantras. You can do kirtana alone or with others. Today, we are going to speak about doing kirtana with others.  Kirtana or congregational chanting of mantras is an age-old spiritual practice dating back thousands of years. In the bhakti yoga tradition this is a call and response technique: whoever is “leading” the kirtana will “call out” the hare krishna mantra and everyone else will respond with the same mantra. This is all set to music, traditionally the harmonium (a reed organ), kartels (cymbals) and a mrdanga (a clay drum). Because of the musical element kirtanas are enjoyable to hear, but because the mantras are sacred it is actually an uplifting sacred sound experience for all.  Harnessing the healing vibrations of kirtana You don’t need to do much to harness the healing vibrations of kirtana: just attend! These mantras, which have been chanted throughout history have their own transcendental sound vibration and this is healing. All you have to do is sit back, relax and dive deep into hearing and chanting. In the company of friends this is not hard to do at all!  A journey through meditation and mindfulness Doing kirtana encourages mindfulness because when focusing on the mantra you let go of all other things in your mind. This is not only peaceful but can help in your day-to-day life. When you regularly practice chanting mantra you will find your daily concentration and focus skills improve. And your stress lessens.  Soothing the soul and elevating the spirit Perhaps the best thing about kirtana is that it can be done with others. There is nothing more enlivening than to share this spiritual experience. The simple call and response technique not only increases momentum but uplifts the heart. Try it out for yourself!

Stress and anxiety are often common companions, leaving you feeling disconnected and overwhelmed. At Hare Krishna Melbourne, we get it. We understand the need for balance and inner peace. We also know with yoga and meditation you can reconnect with your self, restoring clarity and calm to daily life. The power of bhakti-yoga Often associated with physical postures, the essence of yoga extends beyond the body. The word yoga literally means ‘union’, a connection between the mind, body, and soul. And bhakti-yoga is the practice of nurturing this mind, body and soul connection through devotion and mindfulness. Cultivating love and compassion, this form of yoga invites a deeper, transcendental understanding of self. Encouraging self-reflection, bhakti-yoga re-establishes a meaningful relationship with the divine, separate from everyday stress. Learn more about Bhakti Yoga here. Essentially, bhakti-yoga incorporates meditation, chanting and acts of kindness into daily life. Through these practices stress fades, and contentment takes its place. Unlike yoga classes focusing mainly on movement, bhakti-yoga places emphasis on the heart and mind, an accessible, enriching experience for people from all walks of life. The role of mantra meditation in stress relief Meditation is a powerful tool for calming the mind. When combined with mantra chanting, it becomes even more transformative. “Man” means mind and “tra” means to free, so mantra means to free the mind. The mind is often restless, jumping from one thought to another. By focusing on sacred sounds through mantra meditation, you can shift away from stress and into a state of inner peace. In bhakti-yoga, chanting mantras clears mental distractions and cultivates spiritual awareness. The power of mantra in bhakti-yoga lies in its ability to uplift and purify the consciousness. Discover how mantra meditation can support your journey here. The Hare Krishna mantra is especially known for its ability to bring joy and serenity. It is simple to practice – whether alone or in a group – and creates a sense of harmony that lingers long after the chanting ends. Food Relief in Melbourne: Supporting Communities Through the Cost of Living Crisis in 2025

Melbourne’s growing cost-of-living crisis intensifies the financial strain on its residents, with rising housing prices, increasing rent, and high-priced everyday expenses. With inflation impacting everything from energy bills to groceries, the cost of essentials continues to climb and make it difficult for many to keep up. As a result, more individuals and families need to turn to community support services to help make ends meet. To help households combat the cost of living crisis, Hare Krishna’s Food For Life program and Crossways Restaurant offer food relief in Melbourne. These initiatives provide free and low-cost meals to anyone in need, as we believe it is our mission to give food and support to our local community. Through these efforts, we strive to ensure that no one in Melbourne has to go hungry, regardless of their circumstances. The Growing Cost of Living Crisis in Melbourne The Australian Bureau of Statistics measures the cost of living using the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which averages common expenses like rent, mortgages, groceries, transport, healthcare, utilities, and more. Melbourne’s CPI showed an annual rise of 2.5% from 2024 to 2025, reflecting the inflated cost of essential needs and services. Housing affordability remains a key concern, with rental prices and mortgage repayments increasing due to higher interest rates. Along with the rising prices of groceries, energy bills, and transport, this financial strain on Melbourne households makes it harder to maintain their standard of living. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that food and non-alcoholic beverage prices in Australia rose by 3.3% in the 12 months leading up to January 2025. This increase is higher than Melbourne’s overall CPI rise of 2.5% during the same period. Rising production, transport, and labour costs continue to push food prices higher, which continues to exacerbate Melbourne’s ongoing cost-of-living pressures. Hare Krishna Food For Life At Hare Krishna Melbourne, we believe no one should have to go hungry. For decades, we’ve been providing free and low-cost meals to those in need, standing by our community through crises big and small.  Our Food For Life kitchen, based at our temple in Albert Park, serves free meals three times a day, seven days a week. Whether you’re in need of a warm breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you are always welcome to join us. Meals are served in the Prasadam Hall upstairs from the Temple Room. Beyond our temple, we bring food directly to the community. Every Sunday evening from 5pm, we distribute free meals at the South Melbourne Market. You’ll find us at the corner of Cecil and Coventry streets, ready to serve anyone who needs a nourishing meal. All our Food For Life meals are vegetarian and may contain dairy, nuts, and/or gluten. If you have any dietary requirements, please let us know so we can do our best to provide suitable food for you.  No matter your circumstances, we’re here to help. If you need a meal, Hare Krishna Melbourne will always offer you a place at our table. Crossways Restaurant At Hare Krishna’s Crossways restaurant, we serve affordable, all-you-can-eat vegetarian and vegan meals in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. Crossways is more than just a restaurant. It is a welcoming space where anyone can enjoy wholesome, nourishing food, no matter who you are.  Open Monday to Saturday, from 11:30am to 8:00pm, we serve a rotating daily menu that brings variety to your plate. Every meal includes two courses and a drink, with no extra charge for seconds. At Crossways, we believe that no one should go hungry or feel left behind. Since opening our doors in 1983, we’ve been a hub of community, connection, and spirituality, ensuring that you will find a hearty meal and a welcoming space here.   Food Relief Melbourne Melbourne’s cost-of-living crisis continues to put pressure on households, with rising food prices adding significantly to the financial burden. As essential expenses remain high, Hare Krishna’s mission is to help feed and support our local community through times of need with our Food For Life program and Crossways restaurant.  Donate to Food For Life Melbourne Hare Krishna Melbourne is committed to supporting those facing the challenges of Melbourne’s rising cost of living. As a not-for-profit, UMSU is consistently seeking suppliers that have the ability to provide low-cost food, whilst also catering to our diverse student body and relevant cultural and dietary requirements. Crossways has consistently surpassed expectations on price, quality and service. There have been multiple occasions where we have placed late orders, changed our order last minute, or any other type of complication – Crossways has always worked with us to overcome complications and ensure students get fed. Our students are consistently grateful for the food and its ability to provide a single meal that suits students of all cultures. It provides more than just a free meal, but an opportunity for students to come together, socialise and eat alongside their peers.” ~ Joshua, University of Melbourne Student Union. In addition to the meals provided every Thursday, Hare Krishna Melbourne also collaborates with university clubs, such as the Yoga Club, to support events and further engage with students. This involvement reinforces their commitment to fostering a sense of community within the university, making Hare Krishna Melbourne a vital presence on campus. What are Hare Krishna Pujas?

Hare Krishna pujas are religious rituals that involve offering various items such as flowers, food, and incense to deities. Pujas are performed to show reverence, devotion, and gratitude to the divine.  These practices are an integral part of Hare Krishna worship, performed in temples, homes, and other sacred spaces. While specific customs may vary, they generally involve chanting mantras, reciting prayers, and performing rituals to invoke blessings.  Hare Krishna pujas are a beautiful way to deepen one’s spiritual connection with the divine. About Hare Krishna Pujas While there are many similarities between Hindu and Hare Krishna pujas, there are also some key differences. Hare Krishna devotees worship Lord Krishna and his consort Radha, whereas Hinduism encompasses a wide range of deities and practices. Hare Krishna pujas also involve the use of specific rituals and practices that are unique to the faith, such as the singing of kirtans and the reading of scriptures. In Hare Krishna tradition, having a priest perform a puja is considered to be a way to ensure that the rituals are conducted with the utmost reverence and devotion. The priest who performs the puja is specially trained in the procedures and the rituals involved, and is believed to have a deeper understanding of the significance and symbolism behind each aspect of the puja.  Additionally, having a priest perform the puja can help to create a sacred atmosphere and establish a deep connection with the divine. It allows the devotee to fully immerse themselves in the worship and receive the blessings of the deities. While it is possible for individuals to perform pujas on their own, having a priest perform the puja can help to ensure that the rituals are conducted in the proper manner and that the blessings of the deities are fully invoked. Types of Hare Krishna Pujas The Hare Krishna faith has several pujas (religious ceremonies) that mark different stages of life.  Jata-Karma Jata-Karma is a ritual that is performed shortly after the birth of a child. This ceremony is considered to be an important milestone in a child’s life, marking their entry into the world and the beginning of their spiritual journey. During the Jata-Karma ceremony, the child is welcomed into the world and introduced to their family and community. Prayers and blessings are offered to the child, and the parents seek the blessings of the deities for the child’s health, happiness, and success in life. The Jata-Karma ceremony is intended to be a joyous and auspicious occasion, and is often accompanied by music, chanting, and other forms of celebration. Through this ritual, parents and family members seek to invoke the blessings of the divine and offer their prayers for the child’s spiritual well-being and growth. Niskramana In Hare Krishna tradition, Niskramana is a ritual that is performed when a child leaves the house for the first time. This ritual is typically performed when the child is between six months to one year old and is ready to take their first steps outside the home. Niskramana is considered to be another important early milestone in a child’s life and is believed to mark the beginning of their journey towards knowledge and wisdom. During the Niskramana ceremony, the child is taken outside the home by their parents or other family members. The child is then placed on a piece of cloth or a mat and presented with various objects that symbolise different aspects of the world, such as a book, a mirror, a pen, and a flower. The child is encouraged to touch and explore these objects, which are meant to represent the different facets of life that the child will encounter as they grow and learn. The Niskramana ceremony is intended to be a joyful and auspicious occasion, and is often accompanied by music, chanting, and other forms of celebration. Through this ritual, parents and family members seek to invoke the blessings of the deities and offer their prayers for the child’s well-being and success in life. Vidyarambha and Smavartana Vidyarambha and Samavartana are two important rituals that mark significant milestones in a child’s education. Vidyarambha is a ritual that marks a child’s formal entry into the realm of education. The ceremony is typically performed when a child is around the age of five or six, as they begin their formal education. During the Vidyarambha ceremony, the child is initiated into the world of learning by writing the first letters of the alphabet, usually in a plate of rice or sand. The child is then blessed by the priest and the parents seek the blessings of the deities for the child’s academic success. Samavartana, on the other hand, is a graduation ceremony that marks the completion of a child’s formal education. During the Samavartana ceremony, the child is given a sacred thread to wear, marking their transition into adulthood and the completion of their formal education. Prayers and blessings are offered to the child, and the parents seek the blessings of the deities for their child’s future success and happiness. Vidyarambha and Samavartana are regarded as significant events in one’s life, and are accompanied by prayers, blessings, and celebrations. Through these rituals, parents and family members seek to invoke the blessings of the divine and offer their prayers for the child’s success and well-being. Vivaha Vivaha is a marriage ceremony that marks the union of two souls in holy matrimony. The ceremony includes various rituals and prayers, and is usually performed by a priest in the presence of family and friends.  The couple takes vows to support and cherish each other throughout their lives, and seek the blessings of the divine for a happy and prosperous married life. The Hare Krishna tradition places great importance on the concept of “grhastha ashrama,” or the stage of life in which one is a householder, and views marriage as a means of fulfilling one’s duties and obligations in this stage.  Overall, the Vivaha ceremony in the Hare Krishna tradition is a joyous and meaningful celebration of
